About Labradorite

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar and is named after the location in which it was first found, Labrador, Newfoundland. Now found in many countries, the gem quality found in Finland is called Spectralite. It shows an iridescent play of color known as schiller which can be seen when light is reflected from it.

According to an Eskimo legend, the Northern Lights were once imprisoned in the rocks along the coast of Labrador and it is told that a wandering Eskimo warrior found them and was able to free most of the lights with a mighty blow of his spear. Some of the lights were still trapped within the stone, and thus we have today the beautiful mineral known as labradorite.

Healers use labradorite to relieve the symptoms of arthritis and other joint and bone diseases. Wearers believe the stone lowers blood pressure, balances metabolism and enhances the immune system. Energetically, labradorite clears the chakras, bringing about equilibrium in mind, body and spirit. The belief in the healing power of stones dates back to prehistory. Many ancient cultures used stones in healing ceremonies, by either placing the stone around the ill person or on the body.
